About BJM Controls

Brent Mitchell - Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

  • Brent Mitchell, the principle of the company, graduated from the University of Alberta in chemical engineering (computer process control) in 1993.  He also is a journeyman instrument mechanic and has a diploma from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in instrumentation engineering technology (1987).  In his 35 year career, Brent has held both technical and supervisory roles in oil sand plants, chemical plants and as a consulting engineer.

Mike Currie - BSc - Programmer

  • Mike, with his extensive industry experience spanning over 35 years, has been an invaluable asset to numerous projects at BJM Controls.  His expertise and knowledge have been particularly evident in his role as the lead programmer for a project aimed at gathering downtime data from equipment at a textile plant.  This robust system has proven to be extremely beneficial to the client, enhancing their downtime performance by a significant 33%.

Ashton Martin - Masters - Mechanical Engineer - Biomedical

  • Ashton, a recent graduate with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, has focused his research on sensor-based systems applied to biomechanics, specifically in relation to brain injuries sustained by athletes and military personnel.  This research and the equipment he utilized have proven to be highly applicable to his work at BJM Controls.

-

  • Currently, Ashton is involved in the creation of an Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) system for the oil industry.  The system collects temperature data from multiple sensors installed at an oil well lift station.  The data is then gathered and transmitted to the cloud via a cellular link.  Ashton has also developed a dashboard for the customer to view the historical data.  In case of any temperature anomalies, either too high or too low, the system promptly notifies the field operator via text message.

Geoff Child - Electronics Specialist

  • With over four decades of experience in the electronics field, Geoff has honed his skills in designing and constructing boards for various industries. His extensive experience has equipped him with the knowledge to create robust electronic systems that can withstand less than ideal conditions for many years.  Despite the challenges of sourcing electronic components in today’s shifting geopolitical landscape, Geoff’s global network of suppliers enables him to procure even the most elusive components.

-

  • Geoff’s expertise was instrumental in designing and constructing a board for BJM Controls’ inaugural application, a system that gathers data from 35 looms in a textile plant. This was a demanding task due to the electrically noisy environment the looms generate, which can cause false positive signals, erratic power supplies, and high vibrations.  Despite these challenges, Geoff successfully built a robust system capable of withstanding this rigorous application.

-

  • Geoff has finished constructing BJM’s universal board. Drawing from the insights gained from various IIoT installations, the team recognized the need for a universal board capable of managing all the inputs and outputs encountered in numerous industrial applications. The introduction of this board serves as a significant differentiator for BJM Controls.
